Camloc
quarter-turn fasteners are meant to be a modern replacement for the ubiquitous
Dzus fasteners, being more compact, lighter and arguably, simpler to install.
They are available in 2 load ratings: 26/2700 series (200 lb. tension working
load) and 4002 series (700 lb. tension load). They also are unique in having
components usable with thicker composite panels now popular in race cars and
aircraft.

CAMLOC HEAVY DUTY
SERIES
Return to Top
4002 Camlocs are now
the standard in general aviation, Aerospace, Nascar, IRL, Cart and Formula 1.
Working tensile strength is 700 lbs and are meant to replace heavier DZUS
fasteners. The 4002 series are no less "fiddely" than DZUS, however, using a
stud, stud grommets, grommet retainers, and various receptacles. But they are
also modern enough to accommodate thicker composite panel thickness.
Grommets are fitted to the outer panel to strengthen the installation, prevent
vibration and hole enlargement, and serve as a stud retainer (tool CM4P3 plier
is used to compress the stud to install it in the grommet). Grommets are
realigned in the outer panel via a snap ring (which requires snap ring
installation tool CMT26). In addition, flare retained grommets are available
for thick composite panels or high vibration installations. Grommets are
available in different panel thicknesses as denoted on their head stamp. Studs
are available in .030 increments, also denoted by a dash number head stamp.
Slotted, phillips and winged heads are available.

To select the proper stud length, first select the grommet, then
select the receptacle and lastly select the stud style. Now refer
to the selection chart below. After determining the total grip thickness, use
the grommet column under which the selected grommet and receptacle appear. Use
the dash number under the receptacle column which appears opposite the
determined total grip thickness. For example, if the determined total grip
thickness "G" was .144, the dash number for a slotted recess stud to
accommodate a flush grommet and standard receptacle would be -4
(CM4002-4).
When replacing studs, most Camloc studs are
stamped with the dash number. However, if your stud is not marked, measure "S"
length. Calculate dash number by the following formula: Dash Number =
("S"-.63)/.03

Grommets are available as flush (requires
20ºdeg, or more correctly, 140º included dimple) or plus flush (a
.025" external rise without the required dimple). These are available in
various grip lengths which, combined with the two retaining rings, allows
several panel thicknesses to be accommodated. Also note the grommets do not
need to be retained tightly in the panel because they will be under tension
when fastened.

DZUS
Fasteners
Return to Top
DZUS quarter turn
fasteners have been a staple of aircraft and race car panel retention since
aluminum replaced fabric. They are available in a confusing array of styles,
sizes and grips.
To calculate stud length.If you are designing an
assembly, calculate the stud length as follows:
L = P+G+Q+H+N
Where L = stud grip length (to bottom of
slot).
P = outer panel thickness.
Q = inner panel thickness.
G = gap
or gasket thickness (if inner panel is dimpled or outer panel is back spot
faced then G = 0)
H = spring height (see "S" for available heights).
N =
thickness of full grommet (if no grommet or half grommet is used then N =
0).
To replace an existing assembly. Most old
DZUS heads are engraved with the part number and length. If not, simply measure
length as indicated. If you have lost the stud,
grip can be measured with a depth micrometer or a digital
caliper depth gauge from outer surface to the spring, then adding in the spring
wire diameter (spring wire diameter: Size 3 = .045", 4 = .062"; 5 = .080", 6 =
.090").
| Oval Head | Flat Head | |||
| AO | FO | No undercut for retainer. For complete removal where panel is curved or must be slid in and out of position. | ||
| AJ | FJ | Long undercut for retainer. | ||
| A | F | Short undercut for retainer. Now being replaced by the more versatile AJ and FJ. |
Stud diameter is indicated by number of 1/16ths and sets the series
number for all other components. Grip is indicated decimally.

Dzus Specialty Tools

Dzus Divot Maker, Driver and Knife. The Dzus Divot Maker makes
those nice little divots in sheet metal for a professional look. The Dzus
Driver has a specially shaped blade to fit the curve slot in Dzus buttons much
better than ordinary screwdrivers, preventing camming out and burring of the
slot. It has a fat handle for better grip and leverage. Much cheaper than the
Snap-On version. The Dzus Knife is a two size right angle version of the
driver, giving more leverage and improved clearance in tight locations. The two
radii mate perfectly with the #5 and #6 Dzus studs.

Dzus Spring Adjuster Tool

Return to Top
This is a handy spring adjusting
tool to effectively set S spring depth. The DZ7301 tool eliminates the need for
various depths of S springs. It also dramatically reduces the number of
different stud lengths required for any project. By properly adjusting the
spring height, you eliminate troublesome fasteners that are either too loose or
too tight.
